The Story of Ruby and Ruby's

About Rockin' Ruby
Ruby Peters was a roller derby queen in Rockford Illinois. She met her husband, my dad, at the skating rink. This wasn’t the pretty powderpuff kinda of derby, this was the elbow you in the teeth kinda derby.
I remember as a pre-teen there were reruns of old derby games on Saturday morning TV (like super early am), I was just waiting for the cartoon shows. But mom watched those games every Saturday. I knew later that she used to skate, but she never really talked about it much other than the show. It wasn’t until after her death that I found documents and letters from that part of her life that I began to understand just what a bad ass she was.
Now just one look from my sweet mom, and I would straighten out and fly right. But it wasn’t because she was mean, or had bursts of anger, it’s because I didn’t want to disappoint her. If I missed curfew, her disappointment in me was enough to make me think twice about doing it again.
She had a tough life, but made damn sure I had everything I needed and wanted. Including buying my first guitar when I was 10. I played the hell out of that beat up ol nylon string box. And when I got my first job at 14, she encouraged me to upgrade and spend my money on my hobby. This dreamer spent every second in my room, listening to records, and playing along with them. Soon, I graduated to programming sequencers and writing songs, playing in rock bands in high school. Ruby always thought it was great, and encouraged me to peruse my dreams.
Never once did she scold me for spending so much time with friends, or in rehearsals, she just wanted me to be free and happy. In return, I tried to be honest and hardworking, trying my best to make her proud.
When she got sick, she downplayed it for years, right until the very end. She never told me to come home, never told me how sick she really was, she wanted me living my dreams.
Ruby let me Rock.

Rockin' Through The Years: The Ruby's Timeline

2022
Get In The Van
The trailer where it all began.
Having followed their hearts from California to Puget Sound, Mel and Jill rounded up a few thousand of their closest vinyl album pals, and took a trailer on the road to Kitsap County's festivals, fairs, parades, breweries, and pretty much anywhere that wanted to bring more fun into the mix.
With racks on wheels, pop-up tents, portable tables, if you needed great music, Ruby's came to you...

Willie Nelson - On The Road Again

Poulsbo Store
The place where it all got real.
After months of building up Ruby's reputation around offering a wide variety of music for fair prices, Mel, Jill and a crew of pirates opened the first Ruby's brick+mortar store in a suitably viking town in the West Sound.
From the head of Liberty Bay in Poulsbo, the products went from just vinyl to now include CDs, cassettes, t-shirts, gifts, and whatever pop culture wonderfulness walked through the door looking to buy/sell/trade.

Montell Jordan - This Is How We Do It

Bainbridge Island Store
The next level.
After an intense period of growth in the Poulsbo store, Ruby's was offered an opportunity to grab a coveted spot near the ferry terminal on Bainbridge Island's main street.
The space is small but mighty, and created a chance to add a perfect pairing for records with tasty beverages from the island's own Pegasus Coffee via walk-up window and decking.
Ruby's Bainbridge store crams more than 1,000 vinyl and 1,000 CDs in to what was the island's original post office - built in 1890 but still very much ready to connect and serve both locals and visitors alike.
Record that sums it all up:
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights

The Future
Online & Offline Expansion
Onwards and upwards.
With a main store and a boutique spin-off all set up, Ruby's currently has it's sights set on taking things tup a notch or three
That means filling out the guitar and hi-fi sections at our Poulsbo flagship, booking more events at the Bainbridge store, and launching this online store to offer a curated selection of pre-orders, collectibles, and our own original merch to the world...
Record that sums it all up:
ELO - Mr. Blue Sky
